Choosing the Mallinson/Mariello household Nintendo Club membership reward… it’s either this tangible plushie Mario hat or a Punch Out! mini–game digital download. While the latter is practical the former can impress chicks.

The next Nintendo game out for the Wii seems to be Takt of Magic. It’s by the company who made Lost Magic for the DS. What makes this TOTALLY AWESOME? The art direction is done by Studio Ghibli artist Yoshiharu Sato.

Nintendo President: We Aren't Competing With Cell Phones Or The iPod→
I read the same thing Kotaku did here (though they only quoted part of the interview, the part that fits their complaint) and came away with a different outlook than they did. Miyamoto says,
Some might say that cell phones are enough. To that, all I can do is respond, “No, take a look at the final product. It’s completely different.” We want to make something you can play with, something fun, and we dedicate ourselves to that end.
I think that is a big difference. While the iPhone/DSi comparisons are more blurry I think that the idea of approaching designing a device that wants to you to have fun rather than call/email/etc is something to be admired.
I’ve found Kotaku’s snarky jadedness of the game industry to be tiring lately. “Hardcore gamers” are all crying about not having enough games? I have about 20 Wii games and 25 DS titles (not nearly all of them) and I don’t have enough time to work on them, despite being an avid gamer. Perhaps they should branch out and read a book or do something expressive?

Iwata Asks - Nintendo DSi→
This is a long two–part interview with various members of the Nintendo team that developed the DSi. It’s great to get a glimpse over their design process and their goals.
I like the idea that on the outside the DSi has features that other things like cell phones have but what differentiates it from other products is that they built it all around the concept of having fun. Where I think Apple’s development goes for ease of use it seems only natural that Nintendo focus on entertainment.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon interview. Terrific insight into the history of the series (20 years old!) and what went into updating the user interface, graphics, and “little details” that make a game great. Some interesting insights into the game mechanics as well.

Virtual Console: Will You Be Buying Commodore 64 Virtual Console Titles?→
So the Wii is going to have C64 titles for $5. It’s kind of funny because a lot of the games I bought for the C64 back in the day cost $5. So much for inflation.
On the other hand I can download most of them here, so why pay $5?
