Disease that spawned Ireland’s potato famine hits... →
“Produce farmers in Massachusetts and elsewhere in New England - already struggling with one of the wettest, coolest summers in recent history - are now battling late blight, a fungus with tiny spores spread by the wind that rots tomato and potato plants. It is the same disease that was responsible for the 19th-century Irish potato famine.” (via Gregg Patay)

Finally! Charlie Card is online
That the MBTA knows how to use the internet is so mind–boggling that this didn’t even occur to me as possible.

"**** Me Up" The Rolling Stones v. St. Sanders →
This is really funny.
lonelysandwich:
The video is still caching. I’ve seen only about 18 seconds of it, following a link from Peter Serafinowicz (“Funniest video of the year so far”) and I can already say it’s imperative you watch it.
UPDATE: Okay, I finished it just now. It broke my mind. No one else make anything. Go home, everybody.

Facebook | Secrets @ Milky Way Lounge →
This bi–monthly night at The Milky Way Lounge makes me giggle because in the local roller–skating rink (Guptills) where I grew up there was a dance club for pre–teens called Secrets.
… In related news the new Milky Way location sucks.

Kate's Mystery Books to Close →
Mystery writers and fans woke up this morning to discover that the impending loss of long-time North Cambridge, Mass., landmark, Kate’s Mystery Books is at hand. The three-story red house with black trim, home to both owner Kate Mattes, who nurtured many writers, and her 26-year-old store, has been sold. The store will close August 1.
BUMMER. I WAS JUST MEANING TO START GOING THERE.

I’ve linked to a few already (1, 2, 3) but to save time linking to all of them just check out the Whoolly Thoughts page on Ravelry. Some amazing geometry/optical illusion crochet and knitting and I think all of the patterns are available to purchase for ~$5 a piece.

Display the Date on the Menubar - Lifehacker →
It would be awesome to customize your menubar clock to just say the era, ie BC/AD.
minimalmac:
There are many utilities and preference panes you can install on your Mac to make the date appear in the menubar next to the time. Avoid them. Everything you need to achive this is already there in your Mac. These detailed instructions will show you how.

Accessible footnotes with HTML and CSS →
I was surprised that Markdown doesn’t have a footnote syntax the way that Textile does (aside: why doesn’t Tumblr support Textile? It’s way better!)
…This method is a bit time consuming but seems to work well.

Scooter riders won't face crackdown, official says →
Yay! I love the Boston PD outlook on law enforcement. Basically it boils down to, “We have too much more important crap to do than ticket scooters.”
Hard Times at Harvard →
Being an MIT employee I worry about this. Essentially funding and stuff (hey, I work in the Academic Office, so I don’t know anything about it) takes years to procure and dispense, thus universities are less prone to the housing stuff and economic issue in general… but at some point down the line there is going to be a scary time.

Obituary: Susan Lydon →
Obituary of the author of the book I am reading, “The Knitting Sutra: Craft as a Spiritual Practice.”
So far it’s been a terrific book that essentially relates the act of knitting to one of mindfulness. Sometimes I like to research where the authors are now and I was saddened to find that she passed away in 2005. I sort of randomly picked up this book but discovered that, aside from loving...

Scooter law revving up worry - The Boston Globe →
Effective August 1st many scooters on the road (most?) in Massachusetts will need license plates. It was done because people felt unsafe with so many scooters on the road and the lack of plates means that it’s harder for scooter drivers to be accountable.
Flipside: scooterists will no longer be able to park on sidewalks or else they face a $65 ticket.
This seems like the sort of thing that the...
